Henri Rousseau never received formal art training and spent most of his career working as a French customs officer, yet he created some of the most distinctive jungle paintings in modern art. He taught himself by copying works at the Louvre and observing plants at Paris's botanical gardens, developing what critics termed a "naive" or "primitive" style. His early exhibitions met with harsh reviews – critics found his work technically unsophisticated and his compositions clumsy. But Rousseau painted with unwavering conviction, creating richly detailed imaginary worlds that owed nothing to academic conventions he'd never been taught.

Rousseau's outsider status ultimately defined his importance to modern art. While academically trained painters pursued technical mastery and realistic representation, Rousseau filled his canvases with fantastical jungles, strangely scaled animals, and figures that appeared almost collaged into their settings. His flat colours, bold compositions, and dreamlike atmospheres caught the attention of avant-garde artists including Picasso and the Surrealists, who recognised genuine originality in his work. Though he died in relative obscurity in 1910, his paintings now occupy prominent positions in major museums worldwide, demonstrating how his lack of formal training freed him to create something entirely new.
