This piece has been digitally refined for colour fidelity and uniformity across my offerings of the Blue Nude series. Colours have been smoothed to produce clean, uniform fields — close to how Matisse's flat colour shapes were intended to read, rather than as captured by a camera or scanner. Then, the Fine Art paper's own natural grain will come through in the print — so the piece retains a tactile, paper-led quality.

Henri Matisse was a master of pure joy in paint. While other artists were moving toward darker, more anxious territory in the early 1900s, Matisse went the opposite direction — exploding colour across canvas with reckless confidence. His greens didn't need to be realistic; his reds didn't need to be correct. What mattered was how colours felt against each other, how they pulled the eye across the painting. The Fauvist room at the 1905 Salon d'Automne was so visually extreme that critic Louis Vauxcelles looked at a classical sculpture standing amid the canvases and quipped "Donatello among the wild beasts" — and the name "wild beast" stuck.

What distinguishes Matisse is how he kept reinventing himself right up until his death at 84. When illness confined him to a wheelchair and made painting difficult, he developed an entirely new form: cutting shapes from painted paper and arranging them into compositions of startling brilliance.
