Paul Klee (1879–1940) painted Cat and Bird in 1928, and it is one of the most hypnotic images in twentieth-century art. A cat's face fills the canvas — stylised, totemic, somewhere between a mask and a dream — with a tiny bird embedded in its forehead, as though the thought of the bird has become the cat itself. Klee called his method "taking a line for a walk"; here he took a very old instinct for a walk, and arrived somewhere strange and unforgettable.
