Jan Toorop was born in Java in 1858 and spent his artistic career in the Netherlands, creating work that bridged Eastern and Western traditions. He moved between styles – Pointillism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau – but his most distinctive work came in the 1890s when he developed an extraordinary linear style featuring elongated figures, flowing hair, and intricate patterns. These weren't just decorative choices. Toorop filled his compositions with symbolic meaning, creating visual puzzles about faith, mortality, and human experience that looked unlike anything else being produced at the time.

His Javanese heritage gave him an appreciation for pattern-work and spiritual symbolism that most European artists lacked. After converting to Catholicism in 1905, his work took on increasingly religious themes whilst maintaining his distinctive style. He created everything from mystical symbolist paintings to striking Art Nouveau posters, and his influence on Dutch graphic design was substantial. Toorop died in 1928, leaving behind work that demonstrates how an artist can honour multiple cultural traditions whilst creating something entirely original.
