You may think the internet was wholly responsible for cat memes... but the Victorians were doing it 100 years prior! These deadpan portraits — dressing cats in hats, bonnets, and accessories and pairing them with a quick caption — were the cat memes of their day. 

Appearing in a 1911 children's book, these photos were the work of Harry Whittier Frees, with words by Eulalie Osgood Grover. I personally love the clash of the black-and-white cat photography with the apparently hand-drawn orange ink borders and typed caption. Simple, but eye-catching. I am pleased to be able to offer this amusing, unusual series as high-quality art prints.
