How do I explain this? Tanzmasken is a series of portraits of a young avant-garde artist couple, Lavinia Schulz (1896–1924) and her husband Walter Holdt (1899–1924), taken by the photographer Minya Diéz-Dührkoop. Each portrait features one of the couple in a bizarre costume of their own making: very sci-fi and, for my money, ahead of its time. They remind me a lot of Japanese TV monsters of the 1970s/80s, and those of Power Rangers fame in the 1990s. I love the pure eccentricity and wild imagination of the costumes. 

For House of Printed Matter's offering of the Tanzmasken portraits, I've added a flash of vivid colour to the sepia tones of the original photographs. A simple change, but one that I think emboldens the figure in each frame. I didn't want to encroach on the focus of the original work, so I've intentionally limited my edits to the plain backgrounds. Hopefully, Schulz and Holdt's Tanzmasken will find new life in your collection.
