Mary Cassatt was an American painter who crashed the Parisian boys' club of Impressionism and made it look effortless. While her male contemporaries were painting ballerinas and water lilies, she turned the domestic sphere — mothers, children, teatime — into radical art. Her bold compositions and masterful use of colour proved that everyday intimacy could be just as powerful as any grand historical scene.

Born into Pittsburgh wealth in 1844, Cassatt defied her family's expectations to study art in Paris, where she became the only American to exhibit with the Impressionists. Her friendship with Degas shaped her work, but she carved out her own distinctive vision: tender yet unsentimental portraits of women's lives, rendered with striking modernity, capturing the quiet power of it all.
