Louis Wain (1860-1939) was an English artist who, for the life of him, could not stop drawing cats. Cats, cats, cats, this guy. With their oversized eyes, expressive faces, and endearing charm, Wain’s drawings and paintings of felines were hugely popular in the Victorian and Edwardian era.

What makes Wain's work particularly fascinating is its evolution over his lifetime. He reportedly began drawing cats to cheer up his wife, who was suffering with illness, and in this way, his early pieces are delightfully simple and playful. However, following a severe head injury in later life, he descended into schizophrenia, and his works became increasingly abstract and vibrant. With their mesmerising patterns and kaleidoscopic colours that feel surprisingly modern, his later work is now seen by many as a precursor to psychedelic art.

He left behind a fascinating and enduring body of work for generations of cat lovers to enjoy.
