Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a confirmed cat lover who contributed several cat images to Champfleury's landmark 1869 book Les Chats — one of the first serious studies of cats in art and culture. The Cats' Rendezvous is the lithograph he made for that book: two cats on a rooftop at night, silhouetted against the moonlight, alert and alive. It is Manet at his most playfully assured.
