Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) was a Nabi painter and a devoted cat lover whose cats appear throughout his work as familiar, intimate presences — curled on chairs, glimpsed in doorways, watching from the edge of a room. The White Cat (1894) is among his earliest and most striking animal paintings: the cat's body arches in a long, sinuous curve against the floor, almost dissolving into pattern. It is both a study of a cat and a study of how colour and line can suggest something barely there.
